I have a hell of a time figuring out which pin I am on. Anything other than the very last pin and I get lost in the lock real quick.

I have never had a reason for remembering a binding order for any lock, and they are all different.  Knowing how the binding order works is important, because that determines which pin is worked.  If the pin is springy, it is not bound, leave that alone for now.  Keep working your way in or out until you find a pin that is stiff, that is bound and ready to be worked.  As that pin is set, another pin will bind as the cylinder turns slightly.  Work the pins that bind, that will make all the pins bind in their own time as the cylinder turns.

This is so helpful, thank you. I'd been watching LPL for years and started picking myself, but had no idea what I'm doing!

Great job explaining it, and the visual drives the mechanics of it home. Thanks for posting. 👍🏻

Great video!  I had no idea counter rotation would effect the binding order in that way.

Thank you! I’ve heard plenty of people talk about how the security pins should feel when they’re set, but I hadn’t considered that the key pins would feel different too! That will be a useful tip for me to remember going forward.

I noticed the easiest way when learning to pick is to rake the pins a few times before you pick. I then proceed to do it like lock picking lawyer. I start with pin 1-5. Then if it’s not picked, then I return back to one and try again. I do this 3 times. If there is no success, I start from 5 and work my way towards one. If this too doesnt work I start to go out of order. Mind you, I pay attention to each pin and when it clicks in position. This tells me what pins are left to pick. Finding out what pin is left is crucial when picking. This video doesnt really show you actual binding pins but the concept behind it. Each lock and each spool can be different with a different feel that you need to pay attention to. Sometimes you get a false set which clicks but makes a different sound or felt way to hard to click into place. This is when you get a false set or security binding pin. I find the pins that pick easiest are usually regular pins, but the ones you have to work really hard on are the safety pins/spools. In this case work on that pin first since it’s really frustrating to work on the safety pin last since you have to release tension losing all your progress sometimes on the pins you already picked. Hope this helps!
