"Why did Carpenter take the risk of ending his movie on such a bleak and mysterious note when test audiences rejected it?" Because he's a true artist.

The Thing was popular internationally. There’s an interview of Guillermo Del Toro where he describes going to a packed theater in Mexico to watch the movie. Carpenter is an infamously anti-Hollywood director who does a lot of things that are intended to go over everyone’s head including the producers and often the whole audience.

I advise anybody who has not seen this movie to watch it. It is unbelievable and a time when movies were something else.

I've forgotten what it's like to have multiple incredible films released over a few months.

It feels like we have to wait for just one every 12 months now.

John Carpenter is brilliant, down-to-earth and most of all, honest. The Thing is my favorite movie of all time.

I mean, the ending kind of had to ambiguous. The whole reason The Thing is scary is because it could be anyone

The ending is spot on. As an audience, we're invited to do something we're rarely given: to have an opinion. In this case, what it means to have "a good judgement of character."

It’s always amusing when people complain the monster was disgusting, the movie was disturbing, etc. That’s the whole point of horror. I hope filmmakers ignore those people; such movies are just not for them.

Most of the film is the struggle these characters have figuring out who's infected and who's still normal. There's only one ending that works, leaving the audience to wonder for themselves and speculate what if they're wrong.

The special effects and horrific transformations are ultimately a distraction from the fundamental question of who is real and who's a fake and if they all really know themselves or not.

Personally, I’ve always thought that both Childs and MacReady were both still human, and killed each other trying to prove that they were.
