  My 2nd great-grandfather was a ship wright in Freeport, Maine in the early 1800's.  This video gave me a glimpse of his trade.  I really appreciate that!

  These incredibly skilled workers are becoming a dying breed.  Fewer and fewer remain.  I don’t think today’s world really appreciates the skill and knowledge it takes to build something like this.  My guess is 300 years ago these guys were just normal guys trying to feed their families

  One of the amazing things here is the mastery of the wood species used.  Each wood has its particular feature or materials specification that makes its use in that application required.  It's like the ancient version of a materials engineer or scientist; and that nature provided just that type of tree, or plant that was needed.  WTF?  Blown away.  Elm for this, Fir for that, Oak for that etc...  Great vid.

  17th century shipwrights would have been awed by the tool and techniques employed in creating this replica. Some they would indeed consider magic.
