Jerusalem Fell to Babylon. This Tablet Tells the Other Side

Jerusalem fell to Babylon in 597 BC. The surviving Babylonian chronicle records the capture—but leaves its king unnamed. Another set of clay tablets preserves the name it omits. How does a deposed ruler turn up in records of oil rations, still carrying a royal title? Follow the evidence from Nebuchadnezzar's campaigns to the exile of Jehoiachin, the young king removed from Jerusalem after a reign of roughly three months. The documents overlap in remarkable ways. They also leave gaps: names missing from one account, differences in chronology and deportation totals, and questions about the exiled king's daily life that the surviving evidence cannot answer. One distinction changes the entire story: the capture of Jerusalem in 597 BC preceded the later destruction usually dated to 587 or 586 BC. The king in the ration lists was removed before that catastrophe. Archaeological evidence of the later fire belongs to that later event.
