  To clarify, this was how club football worked in Europe between 2003 and 2024. The UEFA Champions League format has since changed. Now 36 teams qualify and are split into 4 seeding pots of 9 based on a points based system called UEFA coefficient rankings measuring teams primarily by performance in European competitions in the last 5 years. Each team plays 8 matches in the league phase, 2 matches against 2 other teams from each of the seeding pots. Usual format of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a loss. The 8 teams with the most points move straight into the knockout stage. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th play a 2 legged playoff round, with the winner of each also qualifying for the knockout round. The remaining 16 teams face the same knockout tournament as before.<br><br>The FIFA World Cup is for national teams representing each country. FIFA sets the date for each international break for qualifiers for the World Cup, the continental tournament for national teams for each continent or friendly matches (what you would call exhibition matches). The governing bodies for football in each country then fit their domestic league and cup schedules around those dates.<br><br>The FIFA World Club Cup is the tournament is for club teams. The format used to be a straight knockout tournament in the middle of the season every year between the 6 champions of each continent playing each other in a knockout tournament, with the champions of Europe and South America getting buys to the semifinals as they are traditionally the strongest.<br>Now it’s been expanded to 32 teams and played every 4 years with a qualifying process that even I can’t understand. Chelsea were the first to win it since the format change last year. I prefer the old format because only the most recent club to be champions of your continent should have a chance to be called world champions and the schedule is congested as it is.

  The cup, we in Germany call it Pokal is often exiting and also satisfy to see sometimes bigger teams get kicked out by the underdogs from a village club

  Finland here. We only play indoors when impossible to play at stadiums - like last week when it was -25C, games were inside, but now with only -10C back outside again ;) <br><br>❤

  Remember that this is the system for CLUB teams. NATIONAL teams operate separately and this is where the WORLD CUP (and European Nations Cup, Asian Nations Cup, etc, etc) come into play. There is a LOT of football played around the World 😂😂

  Hey a guy from Ecuador here: The coolest thing is that here in south america we have our own country cups our champions equivalent is called Libertadores and the winners of those and from the other continents play in the world club cup. Futbol is so amazing and your country is hosting the World Cup, you are going to have a blast.

  France here. Most of the time, it&apos;s the first division teams that win the cup. But twice, second division clubs have won. And even a fourth division (amateur) club reached the final, but unfortunately lost. Every year, more than 6,000 clubs participate.
