As an oilfield worker I can tell you that safety is the first thing that goes out the window when the bottom line is being negatively affected.

The acting between Kurt Russell and John Malkovich when they are having the heated argument in the cabin is one of my favourite pieces of acting of all time. Two heavyweights going at one another. Superb. The tension is palpable.

An oil rig was built just for this film, this rig is located in Chalmette, Louisiana where filming mostly took place. Director Peter Berg claimed it was one of the largest practical sets ever built; constructed of 3.2 million pounds of steel in a 2,000,000 gallon water tank.

What makes me cry instantly every time I watch this movie is how the ship that was floating nearby immediately called it in and got their first aid and rescue gear ready, and how several other ships also immediately called it in to the coast guard. People always help and it is beautiful.

The diesel generators that ran out of control (the lights getting super bright) and then exploding were because of the gas vapor escaping from the well and then entering the air intakes on them, leading to what they call a "run away." Happens on diesel trucks sometimes also.

BP is most definitely still in business as the fourth largest oil company in the world with 2023 revenues of $213 billion.
