Interestingly enough, as a songwriter, he was counting syllables, not words. That's why "It's getting better" made sense to him.

What they are saying about "One" is how perfect songs should sound. It should sound familiar like its always existed and yet new. I love how comedians are some of the best appreciators of music and musicians the best appreciators of comedy.
