When a person (or country) shows you who they are through their actions - believe them and act accordingly.

For myself, I would be incensed if I was in that window thinking I had a shot at a five year citizenship, maybe even in the middle of language lessons.

Portugal is so off the table for me as an expat. No freakin way.

Removing the NHR after investing in Portugal meant Portugal was no longer as good of a place to spend most of the year. Well ok I guess there is still more travel in Europe and I can stay in Portugal for a few months every year. Wait it is now 10 years not from the time the money was invested but the card issuance. I have been invested and waiting for 4.5 years and still don't even have biometric appointment. Now it is 15 years best case. That is not reasonable. Portugal asked me to invest and I did. Now my guess is that I am looking at 17 years till I have completed the process. There is nothing slower. Well no one said life was fair but I feel that I have been taken advantage of.

Nobody applied for a GV and paid 500,000 Euros to become a resident. Everyone was “selling” Golden Visas as a path to citizenship in 5 years. Technically he’s right that the law for citizenship is separate from from the GV law. However, concerning the counting of time towards residency is another story that he glosses over. The Portuguese constitution should protect those who already applied for residency under the old law. This is wrong and in my opinion unlawful. It’s clear that Portugal doesn’t want GV applicants and that’s their right. Just return my investment that you gladly took and well call it even.

This situation amazes me. You have 152 deputies who voted for this law and thus rugged a whole lot of people - including people of substantial means. Many of the people who were rugged come from countries in which things are done, shall we say "differently". What could go wrong?

Many of us feel cheated by investing in PT with the Golden Visa. Portugal scammed us.

Correction, permanent residency does not remove travel restrictions, you are still limited in your travels through Europe. Something else I’ve been wondering about is how this is going to negatively affect the property values of those that have already committed to Portugal.

As other options present themselves to expats and Portugal presents itself as unable to keep it's word, even against it's constitutional commitment to "expected outcomes " economic fallout could be severe.

The argument of permanent residency being equal to citizenship falls short. We will all reevaluate the future. The best to Portugal's future.

    Disappointed to say the least.
We are two years in on our residency and this is absolutely a bitter pill to chew. We gave up our home, our community, and our well established work lives to make a new life here. We have been working hard to learn the language, learn the culture, and establish ourselves as good neighbors, and for what?

Yes, we do love it here, the people are indeed lovely, we do feel safer, and our cost of living is marginally less (not hugely less by any stretch)… But, there should have been some type of grandfathering or consideration for those of us who are already this far along. It's a huge slap in the face from the government, especially given that Portugal needs immigrants for long term survival.

Given what it would take to start over again somewhere else, we are not likely to leave as a result… But we can’t help but wonder what other rule or requirement may change. Permanent residency at five years is valuable, but hardly satisfying.
