This game feels like the sort of game that will quickly devolve into me crashing out at you for not thinking the same answer as me, then finding out we're both wrong

    Olexa bragging about understanding base 8 and calling his colleagues “simpletons” just to immediately fumble at fractions

    I love how your initial idea (to send a 0) is the same as what the alien did

    The R (remainder) is actually the dot as in decimals, so in 58:38, it is 5, 1.2 (in base 8)- which would be 5-1.2 = 4- 0.2 = 3.6

    i love how olexa keeps insisting base 8 isnt hard and half the video is him confused about how it works

    "Do fractions even exist in octal?" Of course they do!

-- BIG TLDR; 1/2= 0.4(Oct) because 4 is half of 8, our base. --

Think about it like this;
Say we have the number 1234.
In decimal this can be quantified as: 4 units, 3 tens, 2 hundreds and 1 thousand. In mathematical notation that would be:
1234=4×1+3×10+2×100+1×1000
Notice that all of the second numbers in each of the products are powers of ten (10^0=1), so we can rewrite our "equation" as;
1234=4×10^0+3×10^1+2×10^2+1×10^3. If we were to do this in octal (Base 8) instead, it would be the same thing, but with powers of 8, so;
1234(Oct)=4×8^0+3×8^1+2×8^2+1×8^3. Or, say 200, is; 200(Oct)=0×8^0+0×8^1+2×8^2=2×8^2.

So how would this work with fractions (digits to the right of the point)?
We'll notice that as you go to the left, the "power" of our "base" increases; 7777(Dec)= 7×10^0+7×10^1+7×10^2...
Therefore going to the right would be the "power" of our "base" decreasing. Since units are multiplied by the base to a power of 0, digits past the dot would be multiplied by the base to a negative power.

What is a negative power? Simple, if say, 10^0=10^1/10 and 10^1=10^2/10 and 10^2=10^3/10 and so on... then intuitively it follows that 10^-1=10^0/10=1/10.
Or for any base b, b^-1=1/b. Then:
b^-2=1/b/b=1/b^2, which means that: b^-3=1/b^2/b=1/b^3 and so on and so forth..

So let's go back to our problem. If we want to represent 2/4 in base 8 (or octal), we would do it as such;

2/4=4/8=4×1/8=4×8^-1=.4(Oct)=0.4(Oct)

And that's the solution.

    I had never considered how peculiar decimals would be in octal. fascinating.

    The reason we use base 10 is because we have 10 fingers. Maybe the aliens don’t have pinkies

    I like logical deduction games, so I'm extremly happy, that this video got recommended to me from a youtuber I definitly do not remember ever watching.
Edit: I just checked his channel, and according to the red bars on the bottom of videos I watched a bunch of his videos before, must be a glitch.
Edit2: wait , This is Olenky....how could I have forgotten about him?
distant thunder rumbles
