I was so fascinated by the stories of Wu Zetain that I wrote an entire paper about her in University. Imperial politics were ruthless and Wu had to be ruthless to stay in power. Unfortunately confucianist ideologies and gender roles at the time meant she would never be truely accepted as Emperor.

Just a bit of clarification:

She didn't allow just any commoner in governmental posts. She only allowed those who are highly qualified. She believed that talent and exceptional skill can be found everywhere, not just among the nobility.

The succeeding dynasties kept this reform, but some of them changed it to exclude other groups (e.g. minorities or women). The CCP today revived and improved the Tang system.

I would mention that Wu Zetian referred to herself as Emperor, since empress suggests shes the consort of the emperor, the secondary ruler, while she ended up being Emperor in her own right.

Like Hatshepsut, her successors tried to minimize her achievements. A truly formidable woman.

She was not any worse than her male counterparts. The only reason why she was seen as evil after her death was because she was a woman.

It's always interesting to listen to the lives of female rulers because of how much they had to do to get to power.
