I am 85. I have seen Segovia in person at Ohio State’s Mershon, and in Mainz, Germany. But the most memorable was at the Kennedy Center in the early 70s when Segovia was in his 70s and this was one of his many “last time/farewell” performances. The man played brilliant concert, no microphone, and 14 encores including Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra. Heaven is something you experience on earth. This was one of those instances. His passing was a loss to the world.

It sounded to me as if Ana was trying to show everyone how well she could play, while Segovia was trying to show everyone a beautiful piece of music. As brilliant as Ana is, in this performance it sounded as if she was "playing the notes", while Segovia was "playing the music". It's a common trap among young musicians to display what they have spent hours mastering, but it is a trap nonetheless. I was once rehearsing for a performance with a world-renowned concert pianist, and she stopped me in the middle of our session and said, "You are playing the notes!!! Stop playing the notes and play the music." She made me sit under the piano for the rest of that rehearsal time-slot, and played and played until I could feel the music. It forever changed the way I interpreted those little black dots and expressive instructions on the pages. That was in the early 1980's and a lesson in music I have never forgotten. Thanks, GuitarCody, for a great post.

Segovia’s playing, tempo, warmth, approach is beyond words. The music breathes, glows, sings. Thank you.

Well, I like to go via best, but I’m 80 years old and when I was 19, I heard Segovia play in person and I became addicted, I went to Mexico to study guitar and I play classical guitar now for about 60 years, Segovia is the man

Segovia sounds like he loves what he's playing, Ana sounds like she loves to play...

The wonderful thing is we don't have to choose, we can enjoy both!

I'm 66, so very old school in the world of classical guitar. Segovia was the first classical guitarist I ever saw. I was a teenage blues/rock guitar player and was watching a TV special about the guitar in the early 70s. On comes a film of this old, chubby guy and I laughed and said, "what is this dork going to do?"'. He started to play and my jaw hit the floor. I loved what I heard and soon got myself a classical guitar. So, he was my inspiration to play classical guitar and no matter how good Ana is (and she sure is good) I'm going to prefer Segovia every time. Every note Segovia played was a surprise in its time placement and tone color. Listening to Segovia is an adventure in continuous joyous surprise.

I love Ana's playing but Segovia's playing is masterrful, warmer, more expressive and totally on another level.

I love Ana´s playing. She´s amazing I´´ll forever be in awe of her. But I´ll choose Segovia´s interpretation on this one.
