Thank you for this. I’m a Roman Catholic who is converting to Orthodoxy and this explanation of the Orthodox view helps. As a Catholic, I always saw myself as either saved or damned depending on what sins I committed and whether I could get to confession or not. It’s like one day God loves me and the next day he’s angry and ready to punish me. As someone who’s a bit scrupulous, it was maddening and depressing. God Bless and keep up the great work!

Another wonderful video; I have subscribed so I can hear more. For future videos, I would love more guidance on praying at home and on forgiveness. Thank you.

I really wish that there was a Byzantine Catholic Church close to me, but the closest is 1.5 hours away. I am currently in OCIA at my local Roman Catholic parish. Hopefully one day I will get to visit.

For mortal sins, however, the most effective remedy is repentance, so long as this is true, combined with contrition of heart, confession, and the making of satisfaction, though when death is imminent, or when some other necessity prevent the making of satisfaction and confession, true contrition of heart suffices…when one dies in mortal sin, not only the stain of sin but also the enmity passes from life into death together with him and thus he is necessarily deprived of eternal life. - St. Gennadios Scholarios, On the Difference Between Venial and Mortal Sins

go directly to God himself in prayer for forgiveness on sin. his forgiveness is the only forgiveness that counts on judgment day.

Thank you Father,

As a Catholic I agree with the Father in his understanding of East/West. I feel however it sounds the same but differing terminology. Confessing my sins either the ones I committed recently or in my whole life the Priest in Persona Christi is absolving. If I maintain a close relationship with Christ and His Church living sacramentally, confessing my sins as often as I can, as a Catholic or Byzantine I’m doing the same thing. The end result helps us in living a sanctified life and cease in being separate from Christ.

Thank you father for this explanation, although I think it would be better to notify all of us that the Catechism of the Catholic Church is binding not just on Roman Catholics but also Eastern Catholics. Even if individual catechisms can exist notably in the East.

For example on the distinction between mortal and venial sin, it is not an East/West difference substantially speaking since St. John himself says some sins lead to death while others do not, hence mortal and venial. But I understand you focus on the health vs unhealthy aspect.

Also on original sin it's the same situation because of a nuance, original sin in us today os the stain of original sin not the act like Adam and Eve. Thus both East and West teach that the stain remains and this stain isn't just physical repercussions since we baptize children who will depart early, if they had no stain there would be no need to baptize them as they have done no moral acts. But we do baptize them because they lack original justice the grace infused into Adam and Eve in the beginning. Here East and West only use different languages. East can call it the stain or wound of ancestral sin.

Peace of Christ, father.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the LIGHT of the world. His disciples are little lights reflecting His glory. The closer we get to God the brighter our light will shine. As Christians we want to follow the teachings of the Bible. It's very important to remember that we can't earn our way to Heaven. Salvation is a FREE gift by grace through faith. Let's never forget that the precious BLOOD of Jesus Christ cleanses us from ALL sin which means there is NOTHING that can be added to improve the one time FINISHED redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross. God knows if we are GENUINE believers. Matthew 28:18 & Romans 4:1-6 & Hebrews 10:10-14. 💛

That saying that calls no one sinless except God, even though he has lived only one day on earth, does not refer to those who sin personally, because how can a one-day old child sin? But in this is expressed that mystery of our Faith, that human nature is sinful from its very conception. God did not create man sinful, but pure and holy. But since the first-created Adam lost this garment of sanctity, not from any other sin but from pride alone, and became corruptible and mortal, all people also who come from the seed of Adam are participants of the ancestral sin from their very conception and birth. He who has been born in this way, even though he has not yet performed any sin, is already sinful through this ancestral sin. - Symeon the New Theologian, The Ancestral Sin and our Regeneration, Homily 37

Before Christ we all shared the same ancestral curse and condemnation poured out on all of us from our single forefather, as if it had sprung from the root of the human race and was the common lot of our nature. Each person’s individual action attracted either reproof or praise from God, but no one could do anything about the shared curse and condemnation, or the evil inheritance that had been passed down to him and through him would pass to his descendants. - Gregory Palamas, Homily On The Meeting of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ

Can’t sin be looked at as a wound AND a moral infraction?
