  College faculty member here. While I agree that effective education is about a lot more than how effectively a teacher performs, I’ve long maintained that effective teaching is partly a performance art. Maybe it’s because I did theater when I was younger, but getting students to learn—getting them to stay with what you’re saying when it makes them intellectually and emotionally uncomfortable because it challenges fundamental beliefs of theirs—is partly about engaging them emotionally with a good performance. And, contrary to popular misconception, the research shows that we reason better about the things we are emotionally invested in. When we don’t care, we just fall back on our preconceptions. That said, yes, discussion, journaling, writing essays, doing research papers, etc. are all also central to learning.<br><br>I think the success of Peterson’s academy is not just about Peterson’s personal following. A lot of people do want to learn—but a college education is less and less accessible to more and more people. Many of my students are from less well off backgrounds. They struggle with doing well in class because they also have to work (which means they can’t pursue unpaid internships either) and have to help support members of their family—younger siblings, sick parents and grandparents, sometimes their own children. Grades don’t reflect the struggles students face in any semester to do well. Indeed, research shows grading discourages learning by discouraging risk-taking when, say, writing a paper—stick to what you know well and don’t explore what you are having trouble understanding. And then there’s all the folks who want to keep learning after their four years of college education are up. Higher ed today is badly broken.

  I graduated 2013 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. &nbsp;However, my favorite college class was a 19th Century European History course. &nbsp; There was no textbook but instead we had lectures about the period with a series of novels, &nbsp;both fiction and nonfiction, to read. &nbsp; The grades for the course came from 6 essays we had to write throughout the semester.<br><br>The process of taking the information given to us in the lecture and combining it with experiences or information within the books (one book was a series of short autobiographies of everyday people) was where all the learning happened. &nbsp; To go from &quot;History is memorizing events&quot; to &quot;History is a story that unfolds with many factors shaping its course&quot;, &nbsp;its a huge leap in cognitive ability. &nbsp; You can&apos;t learn how to synthesize data into a cohesive story just by watching lectures.
