Iits not just that we're aware but that we're aware that we're aware

I had a pair of lyretail mollies along with several other fish in a large 30 gallon tank. The female was very shy and would hide in the plants at midlevel even during feeding time. The male would grab some food from the surface, swim down to her level, spit the food out about two inches in front of her, then back off about 3 inches. What a gentleman! Took better care of her than a lot of human men do for their girlfriends!

She is correct, we humans do not hold the monopoly on consciousness.
We should all try and enjoy our brief hiccup of consciousness between oblivions.

What I find most fun about being conscious is that once your start paying attention; everyone wants to read your book. =]

Our intuition has led to enormous knowledge, but the most important groundbreaking inventions and discoveries have been done when we tried to get ourselves free from the illusions that we had regarding ourselves and the world around us. And there is much to achieve by getting rid of the illusions that we currently have.

It's like the eye's asking itself how they see.

What I find so fascinating is the fact that the concept of consciousness still defies definition. We simply cannot describe this phenomenon in concrete terms. This consciousness is like an inner perspective, yet we only have (linguistic) means to describe things from an external perspective. That is the problem.

This is somehow related to the fact that we cannot comprehensively describe our universe either, and that will likely never be possible. Because here, too, we would need an external perspective, but how is that defined if we are part of the universe?

This inner perspective surely only ever “feels.” It is a “feeling.” Not knowing. Feelings are also difficult to describe in language. But they cannot be precisely defined. We cannot define how something feels. Language is simply not the right tool for that.

Well, perhaps we will never be able to solve this problem, because language always presupposes an external perspective.

Or perhaps consciousness and many other things turn out to be illusions. Which raises the question again: what would that mean, or what consequences would it have? ;-)
