Sadly there's no Cat & Fiddle anymore. What happened to Wrynose and hardknott passes, now they are a challenge.

I've got a traumatic memory from the nineties. My sister. who is quite slim and small, driving my Dad's 20 year old Lada, with me as a passenger, up the Sheriffmuir Road from Blairlogie, near Stirling. Hairpin bends, a cliff on one side, a sheer drop on the other, a steep gradient and ice on the road, and a mini tank with no power steering. Blooming car stalled, and jus as we were trying our best to get it started, a Stirling Council gritter van came round the corner, blocked the single track road and in my memory, the two guys in the truck just sat there watching us with a bit of bemusement. Anyway, thanks to those guys for not offering any help, we managed, somehow to get started and they got it into a passing place and let us by😅. Neither of us has driven a Lada since.😆. My Dad's preference for secondhand Ladas in the eighties and nineties gave us many unhappy memories.

having driven the entire length of A75 in summer, with its forests, moorland and coastline scenery, I can easily imagine how it would become an extremely long, bleak and desolate road in winter

I've done the A75 many many times, holidaying up there, it's very long, the section after Dumfries is atypical UK A road then it gets more remote tho little villages are close by but the section after Newton Stewart is the most accident ridden of all on the way to Stranraer, if you can do the remoteness, the area - it's very beautiful but with a storm it's quite exposed 👍

another road worth mentioning is B8007, which is the only road into or out of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the westernmost point of the GB mainland - from Salen, it's a single-tracked but fully paved road that goes through 20 miles of dense forest, then climbs up onto moorland, then dives back down again to go through Kilchoan (which has a ferry terminal to Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull, which is a metropolis in comparison), then continues up to Achosinch, the last place consistently reachable by road - from there, you can get to Ardnamurchan lighthouse itself via a very narrow road, but to get to Corrachadh Mòr (the westernmost point on mainland GB) you have to walk the rest of the way
