There are so many multi-millionaires in these stories. Money is really losing its value fast these days.

Amazing, board of directors must have transported in to have arrived so quickly.

Protagonists of these "irreplaceable author" IT stories often boast about how incomprehensive the system becomes when someone attempts an unauthorized use, stunning everyone else (including the IT personnel whose tech qualification is presumably limited by the ability to start Microsoft Office). But the real point is not dramatic effects of the license revocation, but how exactly the license checks are enforced. The corporation does not act at user level only. It's not a big deal for a software engineer to get around a license check in the code. Even if you spread them all over the app, it's a typical pattern which can be found and patched. That's why there are so many laws against piracy. It cannot be defeated using technical measures only. Moreover it's fairly simple to reimplement the most quantitative parts protected by license in legally different way, while keeping it effectively doing the same thing, so the author cannot sue the corporation. It would cost at most a million to pay a small team of engineers to do so. But the story heroes keep getting dozens and hundreds of millions by exploiting their hand-made vendor lock as if company management were mindless fools.

Seriously, AI had got to come up with new names. All companies are either Apex, Aegis, Whitcomb or Vance. Same with the characters. The stories are interesting but sometimes I feel like the same person works for various companies all at once.

No company is going to allow any employee to have that kind of proprietary system. Not a snowball's chance in hell. It is totally absurd. Imagine if he had car wreck on Sunday night and he was killed. Monday morning the company would face the same scenario. Come on AI, you can do better than this. The fired tech dude with an IED that he sets off when fired is getting really old.
