Next Sunday Now Ep. 24 | Humility in the Kingdom & Written in Heaven (Luke 14:1-11/Luke 10:17-20)

This week, we look at two very different Gospel readings from the Gospel according to St. Luke: Pastor Krieg discusses Luke 10:17–20, the Gospel appointed for the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels in the 3-Year Lectionary, Year A. The seventy-two return with joy because even the demons are subject to them in Jesus' name. Yet Jesus directs their joy away from their own spiritual accomplishments and toward the greater gift: that their names are written in heaven. We’ll consider the work of the holy angels, Christ’s authority over Satan and his demons, and why our confidence rests not in what we do—even in spiritual victories—but in God's gracious salvation in Christ. Pastor Ogrodowicz discusses Luke 14:1–11, the Gospel appointed for the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity in the 1-Year Lectionary. Jesus heals a man with dropsy on the Sabbath and then teaches about taking the lowest place at a feast. This reading confronts our pride, self-exaltation, and desire for recognition while pointing us toward the humility of Christ, who comes to serve sinners and save those who cannot save themselves. Together, these readings remind us that the Christian life is not ultimately about our own power, accomplishments, or status. Christ is the victor over Satan, Christ humbles Himself for sinners, and Christ gives us the sure promise of salvation.
