OK we’ve got a tough one for you guys: Favorite of the 4 albums?

I have a theory that in later bands, the rest of the band are always a bit in awe of Miles, but with this band, while Miles is the leader (and the guy with the big gig), he's still just one of the guys......and it's part of what gives these albums their free flowing effortless vibe...

For decades, I made my students, my NPR radio listeners, and really anyone else I really talk to, marvel with me at these two days, with Cannonball’s Something Else as a bonus. One of the high points of human expression.

One of your best shows. There are eras of Miles that I don’t care for but this is probably my favorite era of Miles Davis.

“They are grown up people, doing grown up things”. TRUTH. They were tapped for duty when they came into this world

I literally just finished rereading Miles autobiography to prepare for a Miles 100th birthday tribute concert my band just did. One of the best music autobiographies I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot).

This episode got me listenin' to It Never Entered My Mind on a rainy street corner in Sacramento after a long night's work, lol. Felt like it was a soundtrack to my life

When I was a teenager/early 20s, the guys I played with would literally just play the tunes from these albums (we could never hang with "Salt Peanuts"). Then we worked our way into doing our own "versions." We'd try to turn the tunes into funk arrangements or r&b slow jams or whatever. But I associate these albums with what it means to play jazz, because in our minds being able to play this stuff down, and find yr own voice within it is what it meant to be a pro. We'd get gigs with older cats basically because we did this. Some of the guys I played with from that era of my life went to music school (none of them finished), but honestly, it was because we took the time to try and learn these 4 records, specifically that older and more experienced players in our area (just outside Philly) would hire us or let us sit in or would keep us on the stage during bands. Because ALL these tunes get called SO frequently at jam sessions. It was a far better education than any of the schools or teachers we had (and one of my crew went to Berklee).
