RIP Shelley Duvall. She was such a huge part of my childhood.

Every reactor is horrified by the way they leave Danny alone. That's how it was back then. Your parenting skills were mainly judged by how self sufficient your kids were. Wendy even brags about how self sufficient he is in the book.

A crazy piece of trivia is that they managed to make this movie without the child actor Danny Lloyd realizing he was in a horror movie. He did not get to see this movie until he was older.

In the novel, the room is 217, not 237. The lady who died in the room had a love affair with a younger man. She would meet up with him every season at the hotel. He was interested in her for her money (she was rich). As the years went on, he wanted to move on. But she had grown older. When he left her at the hotel, she was so heartbroken and distraught that she filled up the tub, took a handful of sleeping pills, and slipped beneath the water and drown. She did it on the closing day of the hotel, and her bloated rotting body wasn't found till the next season when the hotel reopened. Her spirit hates men, and anyone (especially men) that goes in the room runs the risk of being attacked by her.

Shelley Duvall was in Faerie Tale Theatre. No one ever talks about that series. I loved it as a kid as well. You've got good taste Kristen

This movie is a prime example of how important music and the score is to inciting emotion. The Shining was one of the first Stephen King books I ever read and it’s one of Shelley Duvall’s best movie in my opinion

One thing Kubrick did that you may not even notice is that he moved some furniture around between shots, just to create a sense of unease.

Shelley deserves so much credit for her work in this movie. Her acting does a lot of heavy lifting. Her depiction of fear is one of the best I've seen. You can truly feel her terror. Wendy was my favorite character in the book too.

Jack Nickolson was a volunteer fire fighter and he was actually too good using the axe going through a door, they had to re shoot a few times. Because he got through several doors to fast for the scene.
Also the scenes where Shelley Duvalle reacts so good hysterically, are mostly her real reactions. Because Stanley Kubrick wouldnt tell her most of the times what the scene fully was and didnt tell her how Nickolson would play the scene. So she was actually terrified and scared in nearly all the big thriller scenes, like him coming through the door and where she hit him with the bat.

If i remember correctly she actually suffered some psychological issues after the movie was done from how she was treated by Kubrick and the scenes she had to go through

Danny wasn't possessed; he's psychic but doesn't know how to interpret his intuition. That's why Tony lives in his stomach and shows him things. People always miss that lol
