  The Excelsior was not the 1st transwarp ship. It was the federations 1st. The Vaadwaur were using it long before humans could even go to space, it was them that the borg stole  the technology from

  They should use both, trans.warp to go great distances, then once there, explore using warp. Obviously you can go greater distance faster with transwarp.

  Since the put an effective cap on how fast warp drive can sustain, you need something even faster to traverse the breadth of the galaxy...or even to travel to the nearest other galaxy.  Transwarp...wormholes...slipstream drive...etc.

  According to the lore. Scotty saved the Excelsior by sabotaging it. if the test had gone ahead on time, The Transwarp engines would have failed and tore the Ship apart

  Space is really big, a covered wagon went from Missouri to Oregon in about 3 to 4 months. Now we can do it in hours, it allows us connectivity and commerce. Apply that to space and the only drive that will work is the mushroom drive. We could build a highway from California to Hawaii, but planes are better, same thing for space, but on a much greater scale. I vote for bending spacetime and using an Ionian gate to drive a truck through. There is a whole lot of big empty space you gotta get through to find anything interesting.
