  Institutional admission seemed to be the thing to do if you had money and were in front of the public.  The Kennedy’s had a child named Rosemary who did not live up to the family’s standards.  The admitted her to an institution and had a lobotomy performed on her.  Such a lack of love, affection and respect.  I cannot imagine doing such a horrible thing to my child.😊

  I used to work in an institution in NZ North Island, Just outside PAPAKURA in South of Auckland ,in a Country Farming area. Back then it was build in the middle of nowhere. There were what called Villas back in the 70s . ALL kinds of Mentally Ill, just Patients locked away from all over NZ , was the biggest INSTITUTION I EVER COME ACROSS IN MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, THEY WERE LOCKED AWAY, BUT WELL LOOKED AFTER INDEED, I COULD NEVER BE A NURSE DEALING WITH THIS KIND OF WORK. I WORKED IN A CATERING DEPARTMENT. THEY WERE TREATED WITH LOVE AND KINDNESS, HONESTLY TO GOD. I HAD A GREAT TIME THERE AS I HAD ACCOMMODATION IN THE NURSES HOME. WE HAD MEALS PREPARED, SUPPER  & ALL. IT WAS A GREAT PLACE. I SHALL NEVER FORGET IT.

  Breaks my heart. I became disabled as a teen…suddenly it was assumed I was stupid and useless.  Happily my parents pushed me to ignore the harsh and rude comments of others.  I surprised everyone by becoming a straight A student, and went to grad school, trained at a famous museum….got married had kids, had a good job.   Then I tried to get my doctorate.  I had moved to another state, but had my grades and work which was considered  excellent.  But..The school I applied to, had not heard of the ADA.  They told me that my disability would disturb other students, because I used a computer to speak.  Good grief,I could certainly write.  I had done advanced research and knew things other students didn’t know.  Didn’t matter..if you’re disabled, very few people see you as human or useful.   Yet Einstein couldn’t read till he was  12, and  Stephen Hawking was welcomed everywhere. Maybe it’s because I was a disabled female?   So what, li’ll write as a male scientist, and surprise everyone Lol!

  Prince John was not thought to be difficult. He was diagnosed with severe epilepsy and a developmental disorder - autism not being fully understood then,He was not in any way "locked up".  He had a teacher and played with other children on the estate.The Bowes-Lyons nieces were put in residential care by their parents, that was their decision not  the Queen Mothers.
