Nas had a similar exchange with Prince also. Nas said he reached out to him for a feature on for his album and Prince asked him "do you own your masters" and Nas told him no he didn't. He said Prince told no and explained to him I will not help your record company further exploit you. But he told him whenever you get full control of your masters then you call me. Nas went on to say that conversation with Prince made him take the music business more seriously eventually going after his masters.

OK so my wife used to work for Warner Bros Publishing and I can assure everyone that Prince didn't choose to change his name into a Symbol What happened was that when he told WB to go fly a kite, they said Oh yeah, not only do we own your masters, we also own your PRINCE so if you use that we will sue you for unauthorized use of our trademarked name for OUR artist.

So prince said ok FU and left and it took him a bit to come up with the idea of the symbol which trademarked and had no discernible pronunciation to ensure that no record company, publisher, or greedy corporate anyone or anything could ever own anything of his ever again.

Later, when WB Management had a reshuffle, Prince's continued crusade against the industry and WB in particular caught the attention of the CEO and knowing Prince was treated poorly, the CEO chose to not renew the Copyright on his original name so Price could once again go by his first name of Prince.

Prince told him that because he was a louder voice in our generation, so he spoke all of that for him to warn the others of what they're needing to be doing, DMX knew he wasn't financially ready to take on the label but he could warn others of what they needed to know ..

"Owning your masters" is one hell of a double-entendre for black artists in the American record industry. 🔥🔥🔥

He didn't insist on be called The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. That was what the media dubbed him because they insisted on having a pronounceable name to call him.

Prince was a force man if you grew up in the 80s. My baby sister was a Prince freak, posters on the wall, Prince on MTV everyone had to shut up so she could dream watching him on the TV. Once I remarked when she got a new poster of Prince I said "You know that's a real life-sized photo of him right? I thought she would murder me for insulting him. So I cracked Prince jokes to poke fun at my sister. But we all grow up ya know, I had played guitar since I was 5 or 6, played in bands a bit till it was time to grow up and be responsible. I became more and more impressed and in awe of Prince. The internet gave light to all kinds of things you would never have known about any other way.
But I felt like the world really lost a Gem when passed, just the same as when we lost Michael. They were such an important part to musical history and the music of my youth that made a difference.
But what will ever happen with the music in the vault? I hope he left instructions of how to share at least some of it. It could fund a musical university based on his vision for generations. Prince is 1000% worth remembering, future generations deserve it.

Why is nobody looking into Princes death as a perfectly executed removal of person who was the biggest champion of righting corruption in a billion dollar industry as a pioneer for change.
