Thank you to Joe Dittmar for taking part in this episode of Minutes With. Joe wishes to share the following information with our audience:

The Chatham County, North Carolina First Responders 9/11 Memorial is located in Pittsboro, NC, and features a 19-foot-long, 12,000-pound steel beam salvaged from a World Trade Center building, erected to stand on end and tilted 9 degrees, 11 minutes toward Ground Zero. The memorial was dedicated in 2014 and serves as a centerpiece for honoring the heroes of 9/11 and providing a permanent tribute to the victims of the attacks. If you are moved to donate to the cost of continued maintenance and upkeep, you can do so by sending a tax-free donation to:
Chatham County 9-11 First Responder Memorial Foundation
c/o Teresa Cheek
788 Barker Road
Bear Creek, NC 27207

The man who sung on that day was a long time security guard their and vietnam vet. His name was Rick Rescorla he helped many on the first attack in 1993 and predicted that next time they would come to the air. He pleaded with NYC to repaint the stairwells and do drills and they did. Thanks to him many were saved not only from his singing and directions but also his drills. He died a hero who saved thousands.

“We suggest you return to your work station.” And this, kids, is why you would always question authority instead of blindly following what they advise.

17:25 Joe is referring to Rick Rescorla, the director of security for Morgan Stanley. Rescorla wasn't just some security guy. He was a former British army paratrooper who immigrated to America and became a colonel in the U.S. Army. He was a combat vet who had been involved in some of the most intense firefights of the war. In later life, he had spent years pushing for safety improvements at the Trade Center, and was often ignored by Port Authority management. Not only did he foresee that the buildings could be attacked by air, he actually foresaw the possibility of the 1993 WTC bombing attack as well. He was a thorn in the side of Morgan Stanley management, forcing their staff to practice evacuation regularly. On 9/11, building security advised him not to evacuate. He said "The dumb sons of bitches told me not to evacuate. I told them I'm getting my people the fk out of here." He directed hundreds of people to get out of the towers. To keep up their morale he announced "Today is a great day to be an American!" and sang patriotic songs. There's no way to know exactly how many lives Rescorla saved. The word "hero" is overused today, but the word was made for people like Rick.

The part that really got me was him saying, "I didn't think to ask her to come with me."

I don’t think I’ve heard a South Tower survivor story yet that doesn’t mention Rick. He saved all but 9 of his 2700 employees, as he forced them to do regular evacuation drills. So while people didn’t know how to merge and were panicking in the North Tower, the South Tower had a much easier and swifter evacuation. Extremely important as it fell much quicker than the North.
