Think about this. Have you ever heard a song that you love the first listen but the more you hear it the enjoyment fades? Have you ever heard music that left you wondering and maybe a bit let down because you anticipated more then the more you listen to it the more it grows on you and it becomes among your favorite and it grows and grows. That is Sgt Pepper. Every listen you discover more.
I was 15 the day it was released. I hitch hiked 12 miles leaving at 7:00 in the morning on a Saturday to be at the record store when it opened. I got home and listened to it 5 times over and over. I will never forget that day and I am 76 years old.

The weird looping layered voices at the end were, essentially, a jumpscare for anyone listening on vinyl record at the time. The last ring of a record is cut deeper, called a locked groove, and it's there to catch the needle after the record stops playing but the listener hasn't turned off the machine yet. As a gag, the Beatles put that voice-noise into the locked groove, meaning that would just play infinitely until someone turned it off.

This is their 8th album released in 1967..they definitely were already legends before this even came out

It's hard to imagine that this is the same band that released "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You, Yeah Yeah Yeah" just 4 years earlier.

Mate, you have to realise this was well before Dark Side of the Moon.... Probably the best way to appreciate The Beatles is to start in 1964 and work your way up. Their progress will blow you away.

It's probably hard to appreciate how groundbreaking The Beatles and this album were when viewed from nearly 60 years away but they and it informed so much of what came after.
It would be great to see your reaction to the Jimi Hendrix album Electric Ladyland which was released just a year and a half after this. He was a huge Beatles fan.

You cannot grasp what this did to our closed up minds when it came out in the 60's. It made some us feel gleeful. I remember my nephew bringing the album to our house, face lit with joy. Him grinning, "you've GOT to listen to this!"

Before the Beatles, albums were just compilations of random (usually) cover songs put out by the record company once one of their artists had had a hit single or two. Singles were the basis of the then still relatively small music industry; albums were an optional extra to cash in on an artist's presumed fleeting popularity. They were far from artistic statements of any kind, and the idea someone might still be listening to and appreciating them in 50 years time was inconceivable.

As the Beatles got used to the recording studio environment they began to explore the technical possibilities more and more, with George Martin (their producer)'s help they began to realise more and more of their individual and collective creative dreams. Other musical acts rushed to catch up or risk being left behind in the flood of new ideas and sounds. A new Beatles album was awaited with huge anticipation because you never knew what they were going to do next, to blow your mind and exceed all previous expectations.

Sergeant Peppers for example, made psychedelia a thing, and with George's Indian classical music-inspired contribution, kicked off 'World Music'. On their next album they accidentally invented heavy metal. The world listened. Hundreds of bands followed, grabbing hold of whichever of the new ideas most appealed to them and proceeding to develop them to previously unimaginable artistic heights through the following decades. As Brian May (of Queen) commented: 'The Beatles were our Bible. They opened the doors and we all just walked through." <3
