The ritual path seems like the best option for farming as you dont directly confront the enemy and once you kill the enemy you gain more souls from nearby enemies as well.

Much love about over grinding. It's fun to do a semi blind playthrough and go bare minimum just combing through every inch it also lets you appreciate the visuals.

For those trying to level your crescent falchion early, you can farm moonshadestone shards from the reaper (while equipping providential ring). There’s also a moonshadestone chunk you can get twice from a crystal lizard near there. After killing the reaper, take the staircase to the left where there should be a hidden path. You gotta fight the black skeleton then look at the ledge for the lizard.
