The ONLY problem with these double "Dry-Docks" is that it takes 3 or 4 days for me to get through it all - but well worth it! 😁

When my dad's ship entered San Francisco Bay in the Autumn of 1945 her Homeward Bound Pennant was a yard for every month she had been out of US waters.

Somewhere i saw a picture of a gunboat returning from the Asiatic Fleet circa 1940 and she had not been back to the States since her commissioning in the 1920's. Her pennant was immense - several times longer than the ship and had to be held up by meteorlogical balloons. In addition, she had a Chinese junk's sail lashed to her mast.

Wrt to running diesel engines on bunker fuel at 1:01:39, AFAIU during the time the channel mainly covers there had been some experiments on low speed diesel engines (the kind of engine you'd want on a cargo ship, not a warship). Running a medium speed diesel engines on heavy fuel is nowadays common (or was, until the latest IMO sulphur regulations), but this is a technology that was developed during the 1970'ies (e.g. the Wärtsilä Vasa 32). Similar to steam ships, they depend on heating the fuel to make it pumpable, centrifuging it to get rid of impurities (water, sand, etc.), and then heating it some more to be able to be injected (typically around 140 degC or so).

As for museum ships, I had the fortune of talking to the chief engineer on the Jeremiah O'Brien Liberty Ship museum in San Francisco, who happened to be on duty when I was visiting. And they apparently still run on bunker fuel.

Just on the midget sub attack on Sydney harbour, the USS Chicago which was the primary target was fired upon, but the torpedos missed and hit a depot ship which was sunk for the loss of all 3 midget subs taking part in the operation. My grandparents told me that it caused a fair amount of panic in the civilian population at the time, but in terms of impacting the allied war effort the loss of one depot ship does not stack up very well against their own losses.

Fun fact there were other messages alongside the weather reports that were seen as very useful for decoding enigma. The main one I remember being that there were many isolated observation posts which essentially never saw anything happen during the war so would always send “Keine besonderen ereignisse” (no special occurrences) in their daily reports.

The Southern Pacific Railroad used Bunker C in their Diesel Electric locomotives back in the 1950s when the Southern Pacific still operated steam locomotives which burned burned bunker C. There is a study of how sucessful this program was. The Library at the California State Railroad Museum should have a copy. The diesel locomotives were able to preheat the Bunker C prior to use. On cold start up they operated on diesel fuel until reaching operating temperature and the Bunker C reaching operating temperature. As I understand it the end of steam and the cost of handling the Bunker fuel caused the end of the duel fuel diesel locomotives.

The furious rebuild is My first patreon question and I asked as a friend and I were talking about British carriers and I wanted a more expert opinion on what a furious rebuild would have potentially been.

Thank you Drach for answering the question.

I like to think that the captain of the Santissima Trinidad and the Royal Navy officers who boarded her during Trafalgar had the following exchange …

"Can I offer you a cup of tea before you go?"

"Oh, no thanks. We don't want to put you to any bother. You look frightfully busy"

"Oh, it's no bother at all. Would you like some biscuits? We've had some Hobnobs."

When I was a kid in the early 70s my sister and I used to go and stay at my Aunty Joan's in Scarborough every summer. We always went to see the Naval Warfare.
