Bob Dylan, when asked about Gordon Lightfoot's voice by a music critic, said, "The only thing wrong with Gordon Lightfoot's voice is when he stops singing." High praise indeed.

Thanks for this. His song <i>The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald</i> tends to overshadow all of his other works, so hearing one of his other releases is a nice memory and a treat.

After he died, Bob Dylan’s response was spot on. “Gordon left us without having written a bad song.” Paraphrasing somewhat, but accurate and a beautiful tribute.

"If you could read my mind" is a really pretty song of his, I loved it as a child growing up in Southern California listening to the car AM radio.

Yes, The "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is the more popular story-song, but then there's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy". Epic. 🍁

I believe this was written about the woman who was with John Belushi when he died.

Several years ago I was in a Toronto music shop when the bell wrang signalling someone entering.<br>Then I heard THAT voice behind me.<br>"Good morning!"<br>It was Gordon buying guitar strings.<br>He seemed like ten feet tall, I will never forget it.

In 1967 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation commissioned Gordon to write a song celebrating Canada's Centennial. His "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" joyfully commemorates the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, Canada's transcontinental railroad, yet is also a poignant tribute to the 'navvies,' the low-paid mostly immigrant workmen who built the road by hand in the 1880s.

Thanks Diane! A couple of other Gordon Lightfoot songs you may like are “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” about a ship sinking (true story) and “If You Could Read My Mind” a heartbreaking song about his marriage failing. Thanks again for showing Canada a bit of love!
