I know how Ron remembers all those dates. Memory is a function of interest.

Price makes choosing easier these days.
17wsm, $.40 per round. 25gr polymer tipped packs a punch and is accurate for my skill level to 200yds.
25-06 in, 75gr is a nice round when hand loaded carefully.

The first real varmint cartridge came out prior to the 22 Hornet, in 1912 you had the 22 Hipower in the 99 Savage.

    Mr. Spomer,
I really enjoyed your Grand History of Varmint Cartridges video. I started hunting varmints in 1974. I still hunt California ground squirrels with many different varmint cartridges.
I shoot squirrels with all of the following, 22 rimfire, 22 WMR, 17 HMR, 20 Vartarg, 20 Practical, 20 PPC, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 222 Remington Magnum, 225 Winchester, Wilber Hauck and an Australian Martina in 219 Donaldson Wasp, 220 Weatherby Rocket (my favorite coyote cartridge at 4020 ft/sec. with both the 55 gr. TTSX and 55 gr. Ballistic tip and a 6x47 Lapua. If you contact me I will be pleased to send you a copy of the cartridges I have.
Thank you for all the good videos you make.
JD

Ron - you left out a few greats that need mentioned. After the 17 Fireball came out, the 221 Fireball came out. Both are pretty fun and shoot flat a long way. Todd Kindler apparently necked the 221 Fireball down to a .204 and called it a 20 VarTarg. That's one worth investing - in. One other case that has a parent case of the 222 Russian, adjusted the shouldered and called it a 22 PPC which is arguably the most accurate 22 cartridge ever made.

They forgot my favorite, 22 ARC. Extremely versatile, maybe the most. Shoots big and small bullets, Shoots in gas and bolt guns, with same ammo. And if you handload you can take it all the way up to 62,000 psi in your bolt gun. I LOVE IT!

I didn't realize any commercial cartridge could ever exceed 5,000 ft/sec? That speed is or is close to the thermodynamic regime of hypersonic, which means you begin to form an ionized boundary layer around the bullet. I have no idea what that would do to stability - but it is what causes radio blackout with space vehicles during reentry. Radio waves can't penetrate the ionized boundary layer.
