Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) developed a urinary tract infection that turned into a severe kidney infection. He had a over 100 degree fever and was in severe pain by the last day of the mission. He was a great deal sicker than the movie showed and life threatening.

BTW, the news reports are the actual broadcasts from the event.

"If they could get a washing machine to fly, my Jimmy could land it." One of my all time favorite lines in a movie.

The fact that Lt. Dan tells Forrest that he‘s going to be an astronaut the day Forrest is a shrimp boat captain and ends up getting titanium legs from material used one the space shuttle, when they already knew they’d be doing this movie together always makes my day.

Fun facts: Jim's mother was played by Ron Howard's mom. The priest at the end of the film at the Lovell's was Ron Howard's dad. And EECOM guy Sy (speaking with Gene Kranz a lot) was Ron's brother. At the end of the film, the real Jim Lovell appears in white officer's uniform. Lovell just passed a couple of months ago, his wife about a year before. Both revered folks in space history, especially with this film. Lovell is the only man to fly to the Moon twice (this and Apollo 8) but without walking on it.
