Listening to either of these parents speak for more than 5 minutes, you can easily assume neither should be left in charge of raising a human being

I think people are looking at this only through the lens of, “She knew her child was sick, she was given a treatment plan, she didn’t follow it, therefore she was lazy, selfish, or simply didn’t care.”

I’m not convinced it is that simple.

There is a huge difference between somebody being told what they need to do and somebody actually having the education, health literacy, comprehension, and critical-thinking skills necessary to understand why it has to be done, what can happen if it isn’t done, which symptoms are dangerous, and when a situation has crossed from “something is wrong” into a genuine medical emergency.

That does not excuse medical neglect. The child still has to be protected, and parents are responsible for getting their children appropriate medical care. But understanding why someone failed is not the same thing as excusing the failure.

Listening to this woman throughout the hearing honestly makes me wonder whether we are seeing the long-term consequences of somebody who may have fallen through the cracks educationally herself. I obviously don’t know her school history, so I’m not going to pretend that I do. But there are very concrete moments showing that she struggles with basic comprehension in an extremely serious setting. She doesn’t appear to understand what the word “allegation” means, and she also struggles with the concept of self-incrimination.

That matters.

Because if someone is struggling to understand relatively basic concepts while sitting in a courtroom fighting to keep her children, I think it is completely reasonable to question how well she understood complicated medical terminology, treatment instructions, medication schedules, specialists’ recommendations, warning signs, follow-up requirements, and the consequences of not following those instructions.

People keep saying, “How could she not know this was serious?”

Maybe the uncomfortable answer is that some adults genuinely do not process information, risk, cause-and-effect, or consequences the same way people with stronger education and support systems do.

And THAT is why education matters far beyond getting a diploma or finding a job. This is why children cannot simply be allowed to drift through school, fall years behind, disappear from the system, or enter adulthood without functional literacy and critical-thinking skills. Eventually those children become adults. Some become parents. And suddenly another human being may depend on their ability to understand complicated information and make life-or-death decisions.

Again, none of this means the child should have remained in an unsafe situation. Accountability still matters.

But I think there is a much bigger conversation here than simply calling this woman a monster or saying she was too lazy to follow a treatment plan.

Sometimes what looks like “she didn’t care enough to understand” may actually be “she never developed the tools necessary to fully understand what was happening in the first place.”

And when children fall through the cracks, sometimes the consequences don’t end with them. They show up again in the next generation.
