Simple answer: This is an alternate universe and Scott and Blumhouse wanted to do something different with an old character instead of retelling the same story.

His little facial movements gave me the idea that none of this was truly Michael's choice. He's horrified of what he's doing, but he knows he has to do it because he fears being hurt again. He erased almost all of his morals so he would rise above all the abuse he's been through, and it shows. When Charlotte escaped, when he spoke to Vanessa, calling both himself and her "his", like they're objects more than people. They really did Michael justice in this movie and the actor absolutely killed it.

Because Micheal is so cool that he can't be contained in one movie character. 😎

You just earned yourself a new subscriber! I’m a huge Michael Afton fan and I relate to him a lot because of my own trauma. I 100% agree with your analysis of Michael’s motivation in the games and it fits perfectly with what Scott showed us in the movies.

Michael is morally grey, he’s not all good or evil and I wish more people understood that. He was an abused, neglected child who took out his emotions on his little brother, who was also just as vulnerable and neglected as he was. He regretted the prank he pulled and considered himself an irredeemable monster, which William used to his advantage to groom is own son into doing his bidding. It’s disgusting the more you think about it.

Michael was a victim and a perpetrator at the same time, which is extremely common for abuse victims. Family members are one of the most common perpetrators of abuse too, it’s mostly somebody you know so they can take advantage of you easier or they slowly groom you into trusting them. It doesn’t excuse what Michael did to his brother, but it’s an explanation of why he acted the way he did. It was William’s fault from the start and people who haven’t been abused don’t understand that. You shouldn’t villainize a child who was a victim, sure he shouldn’t have bullied his brother into a coma and then had him killed, but whose fault is that? Exactly, the parent.

It’s disgusting how everything ties back to William. The reason why Michael felt pressured into doing his father’s bidding was because he was groomed and manipulated into doing “what was right” in order to seek redemption not just for killing his brother, but to finally gain his father’s attention and approval. That’s why SL is so important for Michael’s character and the symbolism of him becoming a rotting corpse (the same color as his father’s sprite depictions) only to revive into a new person showcases Michael’s redemption into having autonomy for himself after all these years.

I could go on and on about Michael, but you said his story perfectly and I agree with it 100%. He definitely went through the experiments like his brother did and chooses to relive them as self punishment, also because he feels like he deserves it anyway. He does what William tells him to do because of that approval to be a good person for him and his brother who died by his hands. When he finally realizes the truth because of his sister and brother (golden Freddy) he snaps out of it and obtains autonomy for himself for the first time, even if it’s still tied to his father. It’s better than nothing

In my point the Michael of the movies is just an parallel to Elizabeth, you know the story about always trying to make William proud but never get attention for it and continue the father legacy, all of this things make a connection for Elizabeth. "But who is make an parallel with the Michael of the games?" Vanessa from the movie, the way than her want distance of her father and try to get an new beginning of her life trying to forget about her past make connection with Michael from the games. "But in the movie Circus Baby is aready posses so Elizabeth is already dead",i dont doubt that is another kid is posses Baby, maybe Andrew or other.(It's just my opinion, and your video is great)

it is really cool to me how the filmmakers found Freddy Carter, an actor that looks a lot like the Willian Afton drawned by Claudia Schröder, the ilustrator of the Silver Eyes trilogy
