  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZCy5LdNZB4&amp;t=150">2:30</a> Structural engineer here. The canal boat river system in Germany have only 3 meter of draft. So the water need to be only 3 meters deep. While that is, a lot deeper than most pools its pretty shallow for a canal.<br><br>Most larger stone bridges can have more than a meter of stones and gravel above the arch, being the same mas as 3 meter of water would be. In top of that, a canal have basically no dynamic load.<br><br>Its worth saying that canal bridges is nothing new and have existed for centuries, while most older canal bridges was for much smaller ships.

  One more amazing fact on the Brooklyn Bridge is that the main suspension cables were so well engineered that they have never been replaced....

  All the professionals were absolutely right about the Dubai islands… Maintenance costs alone are extraordinary, and land is shifting. &nbsp;The salt in the water is also eating away the steel and concrete. &nbsp;Dubai has become a literal ghost town, with business owners going bankrupt and large amounts of real estate that can’t be sold. &nbsp;There is a new documentary that’s been released all about it, and it’s very interesting to watch.

  The Aquaduct in Germany: thank you for answering my question. I was wondering if it needed to be stronger to hold the weight of a ship. I did not know that the weight of the ship displaces the water. what an ingenious feat of engineering.

  Its interesting that the Brooklyn Bridge is number 3 on this list...some of the other entries like the palm island in Dubai seem sooooo much more difficult!
