Since you all kept asking why Robert used a Feather. I made video explaining why: https://youtu.be/c6FdDjFXz5s

Watching the scene in the crypt again now shows what a good actor Sean Bean is. You could see every nuance of his inner conflict over not sharing what he knew with Robert. But he had promised his dying sister to protect her son.

The idea that Ned is waiting for Jon to 'take the black' so he'd no longer be a threat to Robert and could then tell him about his past is cool too.

Actually Ned kept his promise and told jon about his mother the next time they met each other.
Jon was in the crypts and watching ned starks statue for the first time after they both parted in s1e1. That is when Sam came inside crypts and told him about his true lineage. Ned kept his promise

The fact that he said he no longer remembers her face to Cerci is also a smart way to say “he never loved her, he loved the idea of her”. Ideas don’t have faces, people do.

In the books when Robert and Ned are down in the crypts Robert says something like, there’s no kings up here in the north only Snow. Snow with a capital S. GRRM is telling us there is a king in the north and his name is Snow. The books are full of clues, far more than we got on the show.

The fact that Ned had his sister's remains brought home and not where Robert wanted her is another masterstroke by Ned. If she is buried anywhere other than the crypt, and Robert finds the truth, he would have razed her tomb to the ground and god only knows what he would have done with her remains. And Ned broke with northern tradition as the only ones allowed to be interred in the crypts were past lords of Winterfell. He tried to protect her even in death.

Lyanna was just fooled by a married man obsessed with profecies who abandoned his wife and children and ran away with a teenager tearing westeros apart

It’s so sad that Catalyn never knew the truth. She spent so many years feeling her husband betrayed her and resenting the child that was the product of that betrayal. It would have been so easy for Ned to have told her the truth but he was such an honorable man that he kept his sister’s secret. Even at the detriment of his own marriage.
