What really bothers me about modern Nintendo is that they seem very concerned about not tying any (worthwhile) rewards to actual challenges anymore, so that basically means most of the content in their games is now optional, which just makes playing feel pointless. People complained a lot about the over-tutorialization back in the Wii days to ensure people knew how to play, but for me it feels way more condescending to dumb down their entire game design so that everyone can finish the games now, instead of the "We noticed you died a lot, here's a helping hand" that we had before. It's not like their games were extremely hard before to warrant making everything so easy now. What's the point of having "puzzles" in Zelda for example if they can be completely bypassed in the new games? Not much of a puzzle at that point is it?<br><br>I mean, unlocking stuff in Mario Kart Wii took actual effort but I still managed to do everything including the time trials as a 12 year old, unlocking stuff felt GOOD. A big reason I like to play as Baby Luigi in Mario Kart is thanks to how tough of a challenge it felt to unlock him in MKWii as a kid, so once I did get him it made me really appreciate the effort I put into it and that made me attached to the character in a way that's just not possible in the newer games for example.

"You do it then" games are what I call "toys". A term I coined in Minecraft alpha when I was in college. Game<->Toy is a spectrum and Nintendo LOVE the idea of making toys more than making games.
