  He 100% knew it was Harry and lied to protect him because he wanted Harry to win the war. He said “I don’t know” because if he flat out said “No,” Harry would’ve been killed on the spot for being a useless prisoner. Draco was being clever, giving the only answer guaranteed to buy Harry more time.

  Draco is a wonderfully constructed character. He is all &quot;nicknames and bigotry&quot; during his early years, wanting Voldemort to get rid of the mudbloods, but as soon as he is placed into the war (book 6) and witnesses a certain character dying, he&apos;s instantly traumatized. The video is correct; child Draco was just following his family&apos;s desires without properly understanding what Voldemort&apos;s regime would entail. Book 6 Draco finally understands it.<br><br>Then book 7 happens, and he realizes he&apos;s not cut out for the war and for the violence that he proclaimed to be necessary for the purification of the wizard world. In fact, I doubt that in his heart he believes that that should happen at all. <br><br>So, I think that in this particular moment, he doesn&apos;t want Voldemort to win, but at the same time, he&apos;s terrified of being put in a position where he might decide the fate of everyone. It&apos;s too much, then he lies for both reasons. <br><br>Now, why am I so certain that he simply didn&apos;t recognize Harry? Because of the epilogue and his respectful nod to Harry at the end. Had Draco really wanted Harry to fail and willingly helped Voldemort, I don&apos;t think he would have the guts to look Harry in the eyes 19 years later and nod. I do believe he was genuinely trying to help Harry, Hermione, and Ron, because at that moment at the Manor, it was so much more than school rivalry; it was life or death.

  We know why...<br><br>The kid didn&apos;t have the malice that Voldemort and the Death Eaters had. He realized quickly enough that he was way too deep over his head once they started asking him to murder people.

  Draco knew 100% that it was Harry, there was no doubt about it. But Draco by this time wasn&apos;t the same person we<br>knew when they were in school together; Lord Voldemort had taken over their lives, tormented his family, and essentially<br>hijacked their home.<br><br>When Draco was younger, he just did what he was raised to believe and treated others accordingly. But as he got older,<br>he learned to make up his own mind and set his own values. We see this when he lowers his wand in the tower with Dumbledore,<br>his heart was never really in being a Death Eater. He only did what he had to do to keep his parents safe and survive Voldemort<br>living in their house. Draco knew that if he confirmed it was Harry, it would be as if he killed him himself, and he never wanted that.<br><br>Yes, Draco is a pure-blood, and he still believed many of the things his parents did, but he was never willing to go as far as the<br>other Death Eaters.

  It&apos;s certain, and confirmed by rowling, that Draco was obvioulsy taught &quot;Pure blood is best blood&quot; ideology form his parents and it was easy to feel good about that at home and in Hogwarts, especially when you are told how awesome Voldemort was. But like many before him, he never actually thought about what that means or what it actually looks like. Seeing Voldemort put him on a suicide mission, his father treated like dirt and seeing Voldemort&apos;s complete lack of caring, actually showed him that it wasn&apos;t what he wanted.

  Draco was intimately familiar with his soul by then and knew identifying Harry/Hermione would irrevocably tear his soul . He chose remorse.
