How 150-Ton Aircraft Are Dismantled in 30 Minutes at the Boneyard

Deep inside the Arizona desert, thousands of retired aircraft sit waiting for their final chapter. But what looks like an aviation graveyard is actually the world's most profitable recycling operation. Each plane holds millions in salvageable parts—from jet engines worth $30 million to cockpit avionics, business-class seats, and even galley equipment. The aircraft dismantling and recycling process begins with "harvesting," where technicians carefully extract engines, auxiliary power units, and electronic systems that can serve another decade of flight on different aircraft. What follows is a meticulous operation to drain hazardous fluids—hydraulic oil, jet fuel, coolant—sometimes hundreds of gallons per plane. Only then do the heavy machines move in. A specialized excavator armed with hydraulic shears—nicknamed the "guillotine"—systematically tears apart the fuselage, reducing a 150-ton aluminum structure to manageable scrap metal in minutes. This industrial recycling process transforms what seems like the end of an aircraft's life into a lucrative new beginning, where virtually nothing goes to waste and every component finds its second life. _________________________________ COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER The Factory Secrets: How It's Made channel does not own all of the material in this video.
