I hate to say it, but such atrocities still exist in the USA and other “civilized” nations. Maybe they aren’t in huge mental institutions, but what about small homes for those whom society has no use and in some homeless encampments?  How many people are found deceased in our major cities every year? On the streets, the woods, under bridges, in tunnels, in abandoned buildings?  How many freeze or starve to death?  Or die of treatable illness or injury?  The truth is, the majority don’t care, or care enough to do anything?  Unfortunately, the average person is not in a position to solve the problem, still, almost anyone can at least acknowledge a person on the street. A nod of the head, smile, or a quick, “good morning,” as you pass costs nothing. “I’ll say a prayer for you, Ma’am,” to a street woman isn’t going to cure her problems, but it can make her life a little more bearable.

German POWs in US camps had it much better than this. I’d suggest they trade places, but even the Germans didn’t deserve such horrid treatment. I wonder about the strippers, how is their health with all that asbestos?  I know an “urban explorer,” and often urge him to wear proper clothing and bring PPE, at least wear a decent mask and work boots, not cheap sneakers!
