  Many people wonder why we celebrate Mother’s Day earlier than in other countries, it’s because we celebrate MOTHERING SUNDAY.  Mothering Sunday is a day honouring mother churches,the church where one is baptised and becomes "a child of the church", celebrated since the Middle Ages in the United Kingdom, Ireland and some Commonwealth countries on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Girls who were in service were allowed the day off to visit their Mother Church and their families.  They baked a simnel cake, decorated with eleven balls of marzipan depicting the apostles (minus Judas). Many people still bake the simnel cake on Mothering Sunday.
