Grew up on Stephen King (I'm 60) but didn't branch out on horror much, other than Poe. Reading had dwindled to just a handful of books a year til my kids convinced me to try audiobooks this year. (I'm on book 57) I create much of my Hoopla and Libby audiobook lists from your suggestions lately so finally decided to subscribe. Thank you so much!

Ghost Story from Peter Straub would get a very high spot on my list. I just finished it and what struck me about it was how smart Straub is about people, what motivates them, and how they behave in bad situations. It has great characters you care about and a story that really ramps up the dread as you go along and realize no one is safe.

Although I have read some awesome horror books, especially lately, I always say I Am Legend is my ultimate! I walked out of the Will Smith version in the cinema. How could a film miss the point by that distance??! Sickening. Get to the end of the book... who is the monster?? The certainty turns into something else. So much depth. The writing and the ending broke my heart. A classic.

My first ever reference to Horror Genre: as an infant living in Mexico there was a black and white show, a 30 minute program at night about an evil witch and a tiny cat walked about in the opening and closing scene.  It was so scary but that is when I became an intrigued fan of the genre.  🎉

Classic, almost forgotten favorites are the men in the jungle by Norman Spinrad, the maze of death, by Philip K Dick, and the plague by Albert Camus

I also loved the ending of The cabin at the end of the world. It lets us analyze why they chose to do what they did.

there was an interesting video by TaleFoundry a few days ago about why cosmic horror is sometimes not scary, but rather can trigger a feeling of awe or what some people call "the sublime". Very insightful I think as why a lot of us love the genre...it isn't actually for the sake of fear, pessimism, etc.

👻NOS4A2 was AMAZING! Super creeped me out last year. I loved it and “Salem’s Lot”; I’m not a big vampire person either but man. Those two books were done right!
