Jesus of Nazareth: His Life, Teachings & Legacy | History for Sleep

Fall asleep to the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth — the first-century Jewish teacher from Galilee whose life, death and the movement that formed around him profoundly shaped world history. Tonight, we travel back almost two thousand years to Roman-ruled Galilee and Judea. We follow the life of Jesus slowly and carefully — from the village world associated with Nazareth to his baptism by John the Baptist, his public teaching in Galilee, his journey to Jerusalem, his crucifixion under Pontius Pilate and the movement that continued after his death. Jesus lived and taught within the Jewish world of the first century. His message centred especially on the kingdom of God. Through short sayings, striking images and memorable parables, he spoke about love of neighbour, forgiveness, wealth and poverty, mercy, prayer, justice, hypocrisy and the responsibilities people owed to one another. The surviving traditions also remember him as a healer and exorcist. Historical study can establish that Jesus had a reputation for healing and that his followers understood extraordinary events around him in religious terms. Whether particular events involved supernatural action belongs to questions that historical methods alone cannot settle. That distinction becomes even more important as the story approaches Jerusalem. Jesus entered the city near Passover and carried out a disruptive symbolic action in the Temple precincts. Soon afterwards, he was arrested. Around AD 30, he was executed by Roman crucifixion under Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea. Crucifixion is one of the most historically secure facts about Jesus’s life. The story did not end there. Very soon after his death, Jesus’s followers proclaimed that God had raised him from the dead. For Christianity, the resurrection stands at the centre of faith. For historians, the existence and early development of resurrection belief can be investigated historically; whether a divine resurrection actually occurred is not something ordinary historical method can prove or disprove. This episode preserves that boundary. It neither asks a believer to set faith aside nor asks a non-believer to accept theological claims as historical conclusions. The sources themselves require care. Jesus left no surviving writings of his own. Some of our earliest Christian evidence comes from Paul’s letters written in the 50s CE. The canonical Gospels were written later in the first century, in Greek, and preserve traditions about Jesus through theological and literary works rather than modern transcripts of conversations. They remain essential historical sources, but they must be read according to the kinds of texts they actually are. Where the sources disagree or historical reconstruction becomes uncertain, this story leaves that uncertainty visible. The same applies to questions such as Jesus’s exact birth year, details of his early life, the length of his ministry and the precise sequence of events surrounding his final days. Tonight, however, there is nothing you need to decide. No doctrine you need to defend. No historical argument you need to finish.
