  St Augustine also reassured his readers on the Sack of Rome in 410 by noting how the Goths mostly just looted and spared the actual population by and large, whereas in similar sacks in pagan times, that was very much not the case.

  Boethius lived after the fall of the western empire but he thought of himself as still being in it. He wrote that Rome had scarcely been heard of much beyond the Caucuses and that while Consuls were still appointed each year they had only symbolic power. In the eastern empire there still was hope but Boethius and his contemporaries knew.
