  They got medals for killing civilians? That's so corrupted. They were not under attacked. They were sailed to an area that they were not authorized to. The captain had a tough choice to make when an unidentified aircraft was approaching.  I get that. But to get rewarded for making a mistake that cost lives? That is so corrupted.

  Even if they weren’t at fault giving them medals for killing over 200 innocent civilians just feels wrong. Imagine how their loved ones feel about that.

  This reminds me of how my brother was killed. He was a marine sniper in Afghanistan. Several platoons were working to extract Taliban from a civilian village. The village, I was told, was in the bottom of “a bowl” and the edges of the bowl were all hills, upon which different U.S. troops were stationed to support those on the ground. A U.S. tank was on the opposite side of this “bowl edge” than my brother, and they saw the glare of one of the snipers’ scopes. My brother’s group was exactly where they were supposed to be, and all of the commanding officers had maps showing where each group was posted up. They did this specifically to avoid crossfire, because they knew they’d have friendly forces facing each other. The rules of engagement dictated that the tank look through their periscopes, announce to the C.O. what they saw, the C.O. checks the maps and, if it’s ruled out that the gun glare can be from one of their own guys, there’s one more periscope check before the gunner asks permission to fire. It’s very similar to the chain of command I saw here, there are so many redundancies built in to avoid mistakes. <br>Well, after the periscope guy announced seeing the first glare, rather than check or do anything else, the C.O. said, “Spray ‘em”, and they sprayed machine gun fire on my brother’s platoon for about 15 seconds. My brother was shot in the face and was killed. Mercifully, none of his other men were hurt.<br><br>We weren’t told the circumstances of his death until way later. Even though they knew immediately it was friendly fire, we were deliberately misled. We didn’t find out about it until a journalist with the Wall Street Journal called us months later, he’d been imbedded with the platoon in Afghanistan, had been there for the aftermath (the platoons being preemptively separated to protect the tankers from the anger of my brother’s platoon), he even witnessed the memorial service they’d held the next day. He wanted to get our comment on the friendly fire aspect bc he was writing an article. And THAT’S how we found out. The subsequent “investigation” was a total sham and puff piece. <br><br>It absolutely makes me sick to see these things happen again and again, especially because they’re almost always covered up, which enables it to happen again. I honestly could have forgiven the marines for the friendly fire. I still would’ve been mad and heartbroken, but I’m a realist. Things happen. Terrible things happen. But the cover-up, the deliberate lies….that’s a choice. I wanted his death to help make things safer, to help avoid future incidents, and they owed him that at least. <br><br><br>Sorry for the novel. But the chain of command aspect of this, not to mention the unintended target and the cover up….just..reminded me of things.

  What makes this so terrifying is that the radar system was basically giving them the correct information. The plane was climbing normally, using a civilian transponder and following its commercial route. The fact that it had taken off from Bandar Abbas, which was also used by the Iranian military and their F-14s, obviously made the situation more suspicious, especially with the ship already involved in combat. But once the crew convinced themselves it was an attacking F-14, every bit of information seemed to get interpreted to fit that belief. 290 people died because of a horrible chain of stress, assumptions and human error. Really shows how dangerous confirmation bias can be when people only have minutes to make a decision.
