Greenery stretches across the fields outside the village. Along a dirt path, Mayank is walking through the field carrying a basket of manure. Mukul is bent over, clearing away bushes, while Deepak is repairing water channels. Other farmers in the vicinity are also working in their respective fields. Mayank (30): (Wiping away sweat) All this is fine, brother—the crops are doing well right now—but do you remember what happened last time? Mukul (32): I remember it vividly. The fields dried up, and half the crop withered away while still standing. We suffered such a huge loss. Deepak (34): That year, even running the household became a struggle. We spent months paying off debts. Young man from a neighboring field (27): Hey Mayank *bhaiya*, what can we do when the village soil is like this? Some days there’s heavy rain, and then suddenly, a drought hits so hard the ground starts to crack. We just can't figure out the weather here. Mayank (30): You're right. Water is a farmer's biggest worry. Narration: Meanwhile, a crowd of women has gathered at the village's old well. Shilpa, Priyanka, and Neha have also arrived with their pitchers to fetch water. Some women are chatting with each other while drawing water. First Woman (40): (Pulling up a bucket) I don't know what kind of village this is. It rains for half the time, and the rest is a dry spell. Later, even finding water becomes a struggle. Second Woman (45): Don't talk about hard times, sister. It’s terrifying—sometimes there isn't even enough water left to drink. Shilpa (29): Truly, the water crisis is the biggest trouble of all. Neha (33): Everyone is afraid, but very few people have the habit of saving water. Narration: The three daughters-in-law continue filling their vessels in silence. Near the well stands a massive banyan tree. Beneath its dense shade, sitting on an earthen platform, is Amma Bimla—the village's oldest woman. Her white hair hangs loose over her shoulders; she wears an old Khadi sari and sways gently while holding a wooden staff. She keeps muttering to herself. Amma Bimla (75): Four days of moonlight, then the dark of night... a spell of drought, then the rains will fall... Narration: Some women standing at the well start laughing when they hear this. One Woman (42): (Laughing) Amma has gone senile with age. Neha (33): One shouldn't speak about anyone like that. She may be old, but she is rich in experience. She has seen a lot of the world. Second Woman (39): You three are the only ones who take her side; the rest of the village thinks she’s mad. Priyanka (31): Some people speak foolishly even at a young age. Narration: The women exchange glances and then pick up their water pots and leave. A short while later, the three daughters-in-law arrive at their respective homes with water-filled pots balanced on their heads. Shilpa goes straight to the kitchen and starts lighting the stove. Priyanka begins gathering the old drums, buckets, and earthen pots kept in a corner of the house into one spot. Neha keeps the water pots covered and pours the leftover water onto the Tulsi plant and the plants in the courtyard. Shilpa (29): Didi, you don't waste even a single drop of water. Neha (33): Water is hard to come by, Shilpa. We must use it carefully. Narration: In the evening, people in the village streets are using water outside their homes. In some places, children are playing by splashing water from pots; elsewhere, water left over from washing clothes is drained straight into the gutter. In many households, half-buckets of water are thrown onto the street, and water used to bathe cows is simply let run off. Seeing all this, Neha, Priyanka, and Shilpa stop. Shilpa (29): Why do people waste so much water? Priyanka (31): Yet, these very people will be the ones struggling for water later on.
