  I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THE WEALTHY BACK THEN AND NOW, HAVE THIS IDEA A PEON IS UNIMPORTANT.  IF NOT FOR US PEONS THEY WOULD HAVE NOTHING.  THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DRESS THEMSELVES OR COOK A MEAL.  WITHOUT US, THEY WOULD BE NOTHING AND STARVE TO DEATH.  I AM A PEON.  I HAVE NOTHING BUT I WORKED MY ASS OFF OVER THE YEARS.  I AM RETIRED NOW BECAUSE I AM 66.  I STILL HAVE NOTHING BUT AT LEAST I KNOW HOW TO BE HUMAN WHICH IS MORE THAN MOST RICH FOLDS KNOW HOW TO DO.

  The Duke was the original Smooth operator. He never gave anyone a chance to woo her. He got the lost princess kingdom and all.

  Very nice story, but the fact that he knew so well she was one of the wealthiest heiresses in England since the Crown had returned her father&apos;s money plus interests or a hugh premium for his good services, and the fact that the duke had investigated her so thoroughly that he even knew she had sold in secret some jewels she possessed, plus the fact that he said he didn&apos;t only intend to rescue her and give her the fortune that was hers but to become her husband diminishes considerably the romance of this story. After the marriage he would automatically become the actual and only owner of her fortune. Goodness gracious, how audacious!!! <br><br>I`m Spanish, years ago I was married to an English man 20 years older than me, Oxford accent, well off, extremely kind and caring who was madly in love with me but after the marriage his mask fell down...

  Some comments show the Duke as mercenary but I didn&apos;t see him that way, &nbsp;He was wealthy enough himself and a marriage contract could make sure she kept her inheritance. At least it would keep the vultures at bay and anyone she married could take what she had if it wasn&apos;t protected. Rather the man who saved her than some gambler who married her because he needed her money.

  I can not believe that at one ball, a woman goes from public humiliation to discovering she is a wealthy heiress, and now a duke (long away from England) wants to marry her after one meeting. &nbsp;No semi-intelligent, semi educated woman upon discovering she is rich will fall over herself to hand her new found freedom to some strange duke she just met that night. &nbsp;No way Jose! &nbsp;If that man wants to marry me, he can damn well get to know him before handing me some bs about &nbsp;being enamored. &nbsp;Yeah, I just inherited a few hundred thousand pounds and you want me to what? &nbsp;Agree to give you total controll of my new fortune and my person? &nbsp;No f&apos;in way pal. You want me and my fortune, duke, you are gonna have to work for it.
