Let's explore the depths of it in the video. The Dark Mark hung above the Bones residence like a wound in the sky, its green skull and serpent casting sickly light across the rooftops of the quiet street. Albus Dumbledore stood in the doorway and looked upon the bodies of Edgar Bones and his wife. He had taught Edgar at Hogwarts. A gifted student. A good man. Both of them, gone, along with the rest of Edgar's family. The Death Eaters had been thorough. Dumbledore sealed the house with a protection charm and walked out into the cold. Why did this war have to consume everything? A sharp crack split the silence outside. The unmistakable sound of Apparition. Dumbledore drew his wand from within his cloak in a single fluid motion. Dumbledore(commanding): "Who goes there?" His voice carried a weight mightier than his age. A figure emerged from the shadows. Long black hair, light stubble across his jaw, leather jacket draped over broad shoulders. Sirius Black stepped into the wandlight. Sirius(tense): "Sirius. Sirius Black." Dumbledore kept his wand raised. The Death Eaters had grown cunning with Polyjuice Potion in recent months. They had already slipped one doppelganger through the Order's defences, and that breach had cost the life of Atticus Black, a ninety-seven-year-old patriarch and the Order's sole remaining link to the wizarding aristocracy. A devastating loss. Dumbledore(measured): "What did I say to the Order at our first meeting?" Sirius(reciting): "That hope will always find a way to defeat the dark. All you have to do is strike the match." Dumbledore lowered his wand. Sirius walked further into the house and glanced at the bodies. Something feral twisted in his expression. Sirius(furious): "Bastards. These people were civilians. They had nothing to do with the Order." Dumbledore(quiet): "What brings you here, Sirius?" Sirius turned from the bodies, his expression shifting from fury to something graver. Sirius(grim): "Augustus Rookwood. You know the name? An Unspeakable. Fourteen years inside the Department of Mysteries… Albus, he's one of them. He's been feeding the Dark Lord intelligence from inside the Ministry this entire time." Dumbledore took a physical step backward. Rookwood. An Unspeakable with access to the most classified research in wizarding Britain. If Voldemort had a spy embedded that deeply, the scale of his infiltration was far worse than anyone in the Order had imagined. Every operation, every safe house, every strategic advantage the Ministry believed it held could already be compromised. Dumbledore had always trusted that Prime Minister Millicent Bagnold kept a firm hand on her cabinet; however her grip had loosened of late. And in that widening gap, the Dark Lord's agents had slithered through. Sirius stood watching him, arms folded, a low grunt escaping his throat. Dumbledore had been thinking for too long. Dumbledore(weary): "I need time to think, my friend. The recent events have been quite a handful for my old brain." He turned and walked out of the house, leaving Sirius among the dead. He found a bench in Godric's Hollow that evening, the ancient town that the great Gryffindor himself had founded centuries ago. A place split between the magical and the mundane, its protection charms laid down by Godric's own hand and maintained by generations who called the village home. Dumbledore sat and turned the state of the war over in his mind. The truth was bleak. The Order of the Phoenix was losing, and the reason was painfully ordinary. Voldemort had more people. Fenrir Greyback had subjugated the werewolf packs early, offering each Alpha a choice: sovereign territory under the Dark Lord's regime, or a beating that left the Alpha broken and Greyback as the new ruler. Pack after pack fell in line. Lucius Malfoy had brought half the wizarding aristocracy to Voldemort's banner, their gold and influence flooding the Dark Lord's war chest. Giants. Inferi. Voldemort's army swelled while the Order scraped together volunteers from a populace too terrified to fight. Dumbledore had pleaded with Bagnold to investigate Malfoy's connections. She had wrung her hands and told him she could hardly risk rebellion in her own cabinet over a hunch.
