I typed it in back in the day. It worked. I spent ages deciphering the graphics characters to type in by using a ruler and lining them up with other characters.

5:37 Also remember that most of the people typing in these programs were kids that didn't even know how to type.

Impressive for something where the core logic is in BASIC!

I found a printout of my old Commodore Pet game from 8th grade - 6 pages of code and enough petscii to make my eyes water just thinking about it. I ended up taking a photo of the printout from my phone, fed it to Claude, and damned if it didn't translate the entire thing - including the petscii - from the photo. Game ran, sounds and all. From a photo of a battered printout from 1983.

We used to do this as kids - and make sure nobody turned off the computer

This sort of thing is what got me into software development as a kid in the 80’s.

Commodore Computing International had a hex loader for some typeins, with a checksum.

I remember typing in lots of these as a kid on my C-64 . Lots of weekend nights spent typing the endless DATA lines , and ever popular peeks and pokes. Then upgraded to C-128 , had some new lines to type then like the DRAW command. Ahhhhh good times indeed , nice video brings back memories. I'm 57 now makes me super nostalgic.

Can‘t overestimate how much „love“ or self-punishment you put into this. I love the effort! The first words of my new birthday/Christmas present C64 were SYNTAX ERROR.
That hit me hard. And from then I couldn’t stop until it obeyed my more sophisticatedly articulated commands.😅
