The European and African theatre was intense but the Pacific theatre was just absolute brutality

Bob's dad being more focused on the car during the goodbye wasn't necessarily him being an asshole, he's just trying to distract himself

! Crucial note: watch the version with intro's before every episode, narrated by veterans and Tom Hanks. It elevates the experience a lot!

I was waiting for this reaction. This show makes Band of Brothers look like Friends.

18:53 the Japanese were very brutal enemies in World War II. They were on Germany and Italy’s side, but they didn’t really share technology or helped them with supplies or fighting like the way the Allies did.

Japanese culture looked down on POWs, regardless of nationality. They would regularly torture and brutalize them, often tying them to trees and using them for bayonet practice. And yes, castration was done to them as well. They did this to Americans, English, Australian, Indian, Chinese, Soviet, Mongolian, Koreans, and tons of other people across Southeast Asia. Unit 731, one of their divisions that conducted human experiments, did some of the most horrific things people have ever been subjected to, on par with what the Jews and Poles had to deal with at Auschwitz.

29:25 last one, you have no idea the absolute hatred so many had for the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. Not justifying it. It just was.
