I paid cash for my last car and the dealership acted like they had no idea how to handle it. They practically begged me to finance it and then pay it off in 3 months. Everything they do is a scam. They're not professionals, they are a uniquely unethical species.

My father in law always bought at the same dealership, about every 3 years. Always paid cash. Always had them do any and all work that the car might have needed.
Last time, a young newbie sales man tried to convince him that buying on credit was a better approach. Went and ran a credit check. Found no credit history. Found he had No Credit Rating. (Of course not! He bought everything with cash. Even the house was payed off years earlier.)
The kid then told him he couldn't buy the car - at all. Buying it with cash wasn't acceptable. (It doesn't generate enough fees.)
That was the day that dealership lost a lifelong customer. I don't think they cared.

I offered cash for a car around 3 years ago. They told me the price would go up by $3240 for cash. They said they make money on the finance and would have to charged me more for cash. They said to take the finance and pay it off by the 3rd payment. I said bye and now buy my cars for a deep discount at auction. That is where cash is king.

Recently I tried to pay cash for a new Volvo. The manager proposed a $1,900 payment for 3 months with cash payment. No deal was made and I walked away.

I haven’t financed a car in over 15 years. I’m not the type to play games. I buy used. 1-2 years old, 15k mileage max. Last car I bought was 2024. I shop online and by the time I get to the dealer, I am focused on 1 car and 1 price. I got to the dealer to test drive and first thing they ask is what monthly payment I want. Tell them 0, paying cash. All of a sudden the price is almost 15 k over the internet price. They couldn’t hide all the extras. Paint protection, fabric protection, nitrogen tires, extended warranty, vin etching and service package. I told them I wasn’t buying all that. They asked what I expected to pay. I replied not 1 dollar over the internet price. In my state you can pay sales tax and license when you register, so I said I would handle it myself. After a little over 1.5 hours and at least 3 trips to the office I wasn’t getting anywhere. He made 1 last trip to the office, I saw a side door and ghosted him. 3 days later, I bought another car at a different dealer for exactly advertised price. Your biggest weapon is being willing to walk at any time.

It’s not painful when you have the money.
I paid $32,000 cash for a new Honda Civic Sport in 2020 for my wife. As I was reviewing the sales contract later that day, I noticed they tacked on $2000 for extended warranty. I specifically declined all add ons. I went back and spoke to the salesman. He apologized and I received a check for $2000+ a few days later.😊

I went to a dealership once, and they would not give me that out the door price. They only talked monthly payments. I went to a competitor they gave me an out the door price and I wrote a check. First dealership called me and I told him I already bought a car because they gave me a price for the car not a monthly payment scheme.

My wife and I bought a one year old certified Honda car from the dealership 1.5 years ago. We paid the internet advertised price. Our salesperson told us that the dealership did not want to sell us the car if we were paying cash for it ( It took almost a week for the money to transfer from my brokerage account to my checking account over the Christmas holiday weekend). The dealership strongly advised us to take out their loan and cancel it the next week. In the end things worked out well… we ended up charging $3000 on our credit card and writing a check for the rest a week later when we picked up the car… I am 68 years old and I pray that this will be the last car that I buy.

If they won't give me a price, I'm out the door, easy decision.

Better off buying off of a person. Never buy a car you can't pay cash for. This is the single dumbest thing you can do. If you have to go to a car lot, go for the loan, get the lowest price you can get not carrying about interest rates. Casually make sure you are able to make unlimited extra payments. After you get the car, go and pay off the loan if not that day before the end of the week.
