Most of these examples aren't "ridiculous" or "absurd" at all. Unusual and bizarre, certainly, but nonetheless completely valid. It's also worth noting that contrary to widespread popular belief, an acquittal for reason of insanity isn't a "get out of jail free card" AT ALL. It generally entails an even longer forced stay in psychiatric institutions (one that is of indefinite length!), and if you've ever spent even a few days in one of those (I have), you know that it's quite possibly WORSE than prison.

EDIT: Kudos to the video's creator for changing the title and thumbnail to make them more accurate and less clickbait-y. "Weirdest" is an excellent word to use here.

Charles Guiteau, the murderer of James Garfield, tried claiming that he only shot the president and that the doctors trying to save Garfield's life actually killed him. He was somewhat right, but the judge and the jury were not convinced, with Guiteau being sentenced to death and hanged.

Furthermore, there is apparently a book out there titled "How to use Courtroom Drama to win cases".

In high school debate on renewable energy, my husband used the argument that Santa lives on the moon. Back in the late 90’s when you couldn’t use computers during rounds, other teams didn’t have any evidence to disprove Santa lives on the moon amongst the material teams had for rounds that we physically had to print and cut out to use in debate. He won a lot of rounds that way.
