That's a pretty common theme running through a lot of older and deeper roguelikes like Nethack: the real metagame progression isn't in statistics but in your own understanding of the game mechanics. It's an effect that's very hard to duplicate just by reading wikis and guides. You end up playing the game differently because you've trained yourself to, and you don't really get there until you've effectively tired yourself out of playing the game the way you used to.

Caves of cud sounds like a philosophical argument centered around cows

Its funny how positive Sseth is about this game, but Devs really hated him.

No worries. You don't need to choose certain people to be friendly with over others via water bonding ritual necessarily.

Some groups are inherently hostile. This is just the only way to fix it as opposed to just having them always be an enemy.

26:00 Syd, the idea behind the acid is that it ticks for very little damage, while enemies deal much more, so if you have a small chance to heal completely at every tick of damage, having a very small ticking damage every turn is preferable to taking a lot of damage every so often; for instance, say you'd heal on the 5th tick, but the enemy can kill you in 4 hits, you'll never heal, even if you dodge, you need to take damage for the heal, while having acid on your feet ticking for neglectable damage will reach that 5th tick no matter what the enemy does

To this day Caves of Qud stands out as one of the best roguelikes I've ever played.

The graphics and UI got a complete overhaul a long time ago, and are now actually really pretty.
And the music, OH, the music.
But, yeh. If you plan to try the game, don't get too attached to your first dozen characters. The learning curve is a learning wall, but its super fun.
